Why diesel cars costs relatively more than petrol cars in India ?
Do the engines cost more to manufacture or are there more duties /?

The Diesel Engine uses more expensive components than a similar petrol engine. "A diesel generates more heat. Unlike a petrol engine, a diesel doesn't have spark plugs to ignite the fuel-air mixture. The ignition happens when it intakes air and compresses it.Along with expensive components, most oil-burners also come fitted with turbochargers and this increases the overall price as well.

Harpi that's right manufacturing of diesel engine cost more then petrol engine and diesel cars are more fuel efficient then petrol that's why diesel cars are more costly.

diesel engines run higher compression ratios, for example, a normal gasoline powered engine have compression ratios ranging from 8-9, diesel powered engines run compression in the region of 15-16, almost double, as the ignition temperature of diesel is significantly higher than that of petrol. For the engine to survive extended period of operations at these compression ratios, they have to be architecturally much stronger(heavier) than their petrol powered counterparts, moreover to achieve these higher compression ratios, they have longer strokes, which means taller engines, longer con rod, and a bigger crank, all making the engine heavier, another area where diesel engines cost more is in the fuel management, petrol engine have fuel rail pressure in the region of 60-80psi, whereas for diesel this is in the region of 1600-1800psi...this necissates the use of a complex twin pump system, the injectors too are correspondingly more expensive owing to the higher fuel pressure they have to endure and operate at...

Very nice information shared. But I want to ask that if companies have invented low cost petrol engines, they can also make low cost diesel engines.
Is there any possibility of that.

Actually as per my knowledge about cars, diesel cars are gives more mileage like petrol cars. Some peoples thought that diesel cars are great rather than petrol cars but it is not truth.

Diesel-powered cars were previously considered as the most widely-used type of car.

The Diesel Engine has expensive components than r petrol engine. generates more heat doesn't have spark plugs .Also the manufacturers and dealers cash in from our thought of mileage.
